Matter of transformation

Ghost: A Pragmatic Design Journey with William James

DEVELOPMENT

This elective was grounded in William James’s pragmatism as a theoretical framework and explored how design can create truth through lived experience. It led me to reflect on how predefined goals can constrain the exploratory space of design, turning design into an act of explaining existing ideas rather than generating new understanding. Through this process, my focus shifted from providing solutions to understanding processes.

The project developed my conceptual framing skills, enabling me to translate abstract philosophical concepts into tangible, experiential design situations. It also reinforced an ongoing reflective attitude within my practice, emphasizing that the value of design lies not in delivering answers, but in creating conditions that allow people to experience, think, and reinterpret reality. In this sense, the project directly contributed to the further development of my vision and identity.

EAs

In terms of material and aesthetic exploration, I used frosted plastic, cotton thread, stones, pinwheel-like forms, and light to shape a ritualistic experience. Here, aesthetics functioned as an attitudinal guide, directing experience and feeling.

Through philosophical inquiry, this project focuses on how users assign meaning to design materials through interaction and whether such interactions can provoke reflection and action.
