Inclusive design and thoughtful technology

THE HARD HOME: A DESIGN FOR DEBATE APPROACH TO ACTIVE AGING IN THE NETHERLANDS

DEVELOPMENTS

Starting from an investigation of longevity in the Blue Zones, the project gradually moved toward a speculative design path that deliberately questioned technology, efficiency, and convenience-driven lifestyles. Through this process, I experienced a transition from a solution-oriented approach to a question-oriented one. I learned that design not only aims to improve existing situations, but can also function as a medium to challenge assumptions, provoke discussion, and encourage reflection, this contributing directly to the formation of my Professional Identity and Vision.

EAs

I began to think about how environments and societies shape bodies and behaviors through lifestyles, cultural contexts, and social structures, rather than focusing solely on individual user experiences.

By designing furniture to be intentionally more effortful, I consciously incorporated interaction resistance as part of my design decisions for the first time, instead of focusing only on visual appearance or comfort.

By deliberately limiting technological intervention, I started to reflect on the role of technology in design. It led me to pay attention to technological restraint and absence, and to how these choices influence experiences.
